The Emmy awards were on television this past weekend and one of the outstanding red carpet fashion trends was....well, red. Red gowns were everywhere. This should surprise no one considering the color is one of the strongest overarching trends for Fall 2011, as you can see reflected in the pages of Harper's Bazaar (above). That said, I actually find it hard to call red a trend. After all, it's always a favorite, always makes a statement, and works whether your style goes toward avant garde or classic chic.
In looking at the fashionable options for Fall, I continue to see classic cinema act as inspiration to today's designers. There are many incredible red dresses in film, ranging from demure and cool for cocktails to va va voom vixen. Here are just a few of the greats, starting with one of my favorite actresses, the sultry Sophia Loren. She looks so sophisticated in this red wool shortsleeve stunner that I had to share...dressed like a lady, but still as sexy as can be. All women should take note.

Soooo glad you included that stunner shot of Lucille Ball! I hear ladies moan constantly that they "can't wear red"--which is patently ridiculous--as you well know, it's all about the intensity of color and the shade of red. While you might wear fire-engine, I can wear cranberry--but we're both making a strong statement that's right in step with this season's trend AND the glorious past in film. Thanks, Kimberly!

So true, Kay! I tried to make sure I represented stars that were blondes, brunettes, and redheads here to show that all can wear red. And practice makes perfect--as you mentioned, we must try different shades of red until we find the ones that work best for us. This is actually true for any color in the spectrum--yellow, green, orange, etc. No color is off limits, it's only a matter of seeing which shade works best.
I recommend trying various shades of colors on without any makeup. Some shades will make your eyes pop, your skin look more luminous, bring a flush to your cheeks. Others will wash you out and no amount of makeup could revive you. It's a pretty solid test for seeing what colors are right for you.
And with red in particular, nail polish is a fun and easy way to experiment with different shades and see which ones you enjoy the most.
