How amazing does Hollywood Boulevard look in this photograph from Christmas 1939? With all the crowds lined up along the street, it seems like the whole city is here to see the parade and celebrate. One of my favorite historic landmarks, the Roosevelt Hotel, can be seen in the distance. What makes me even more in awe of the moment that this photograph captures is that this is 1939...the end of the year that was declared the "Greatest Year in the History of Hollywood." Movies that premiered in 1939 included Gone with the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, and The Women among many many other classics.

Also listen to this great old recording of the Glenn Miller Orchestra performing "Jingle Bells" in Hollywood. Though this comes from 1941, it's certainly what they what they would have sounded like in 1939.
