For those who live in Los Angeles, you are invited to THE STYLE ESSENTIALS: HISTORY OF FASHION IN FILM 1920s - 1930s! The Style Essentials represent iconic costume design in the movies from the 1920s to the 1970s that continues to influence fashion today. This is the first part of a much larger presentation I first did at FIDM at the end of the summer and has now expanded into a class I will be teaching as a Professor at Woodbury University this January. This evening will look at the start of the film industry and style icons through the glamorous age of Art Deco. Stills from the movies along with images from the fashion runways are accompanied by a discussion of the costumes, costume and fashion designers, stars, and film backstories.
Monday, November 12th
Marion Davies' former beachfront estate
6:30 - 8:00 PM
FREE to the public, but you must RSVP
$5 parking for attendees
The venue is perfect for the presentation since Marion Davies was at her height during the 1920s and 1930s, and nearly all of these women were her friends and stayed and played at the Beach House. In fact, the original Guest House and pool still stand! Come early and join the special docent tour for attendees 5:15 - 6:15 PM. Hope to see you there!

Looks like plenty of fun, and I just gave it a plug at "Carole & Co." (http://carole-and-co.livejournal.com/555502.html). I only wish I could be there! Keep up the good work.
Thank you so much for sharing! I wish you could be there...I know you would really enjoy yourself (yes, Travis Banton is indeed a featured costume designer). But have no fear...I am sure I'll be presenting this again, especially since there are two more parts--the 1940s/1950s and 1960s/1970s. Stay tuned!
Marion is one of my favorites. I live in the San Luis Obispo area, but unfortunately I cannot attend :( At least I got to go to Hearst Castle last weekend to get my Marion fix! :)
Oh, so sorry you'll miss it, Miss Crayola Creepy! I plan to finish with a huge feature on Marion, her style in the movies, and influential offscreen style as well. You would have loved it. But glad to hear you visited Hearst Castle--so exciting!
Will you take some photos for all of us that can't attend? Please? :)
Will do! :) If you want a quick Marion fix and to get a virtual tour of where we'll be, you can check out the video here as well.
I love your blog! I'm doing research to find locations in Southern CA to Porterville for places to take our engagement photos, (we're trying to reenact scenes from The Philadelphia Story and other 1930s films); and in my research I came across your blog! We're from Northern CA and just moved to LA so having to do a lot of research! I'm sad that I missed this event only by a few weeks! I'll have to keep checking back for future events. Keep up the great work & thanks again!
Thanks Jazzie! As you can see, the Beach House is a beautiful place and would be great fun to shoot photos. Stay in touch!
